How to Repair a Garage Door : Springs and Cables
How to Repair a Garage Door: Springs and Cables
Before
you start, you should know that no one can repair garage door springs and
cables. In fact, there are cases where you will need a professional to take
care of the job. However, if you follow these garage door repair instructions,
you shouldn't have a problem.
You will need the following tools and materials:
- Hammer
- Clamps
- Protective equipment such as safety glasses and leather gloves.
- Set of keys with an adjustable wrench
- Drill
- Locking pliers
- Winding bars
- Set of socket wrenches and ratchet
- Lifting cables
- Torsion springs
- Lower supports
Please
note, this is for rebuilding your torsion spring system and not for replacing
your garage door springs. Also, you need to find out how much you will save by
doing these kinds of activities yourself.
There
are cases where you will not save a lot of money. For this reason, we encourage
you to always do some basic research before even starting work. That way, you
can tell the difference between the cost of repairing a professional garage
door and doing the project yourself.
The
steps to repair a garage door are as follows:
1.
Lock garage door and loosen intact springs
2.
Uncoil and disconnect the springs from the center bracket.
3.
Secure the torsion tube and remove the old springs.
4.
Installing the new center bearing and left spring
5.
Replace rollers, lift cables, and bottom brackets
6.
Thread the cables and tighten the drums
We will go over each of these.
Step # 1: Lock the garage door and loosen the intact springs
You
will first start by holding the garage door in place with the pliers and
locking clamps. This is to help prevent any accidents that might occur due to
an open garage door.
Then,
using your winding bar, you will loosen the good spring. Place it on the
winding cone and begin loosening the set screws. Be careful, as the spring can
turn aggressively when loosening.
Step # 2: Unroll and Disconnect the Springs from the Center Bracket
Using
a second winding bar, place it into the next hole, making a nearly 90 degree
angle between the winding bars. After that, remove the first winding bar and
turn the spring. Do this by hovering over the movement.
Remove
the bolts and nuts that are on the stationary cones. After that, try to slide the
springs to the supports that are at the end.
Step # 3: Secure the torsion tube and remove the old springs
Use
your locking pliers to loosen the set screws found on the left and right light
cable drums. Then disconnect the cables.
When
you're done disconnecting the cables, start on the left side of the door by
sliding the torsion tube to the right. That way, you can remove the cable drum.
Lastly, you can pull the broken spring out of the tube.
Step # 4: Install the New Center Bearing and Left Spring
First,
you will need to reassemble by sliding the replacement torsion spring onto the
tube. Note that during this step, you will need to have the cone fixed facing
the center support. After that, you can install the cable drum again and
reinsert the torsion bar.
Second,
you will need to connect the stationary cones to the bracket by sliding the
center bearing over the torsion bar.
Step # 5: Replace the rollers, lifting cables, and bottom brackets
This
is the perfect time to change rusty rollers, cables, and bottom brackets. You
can do this by first placing the lift cable loop on the new bottom bracket.
Step # 6: Thread the wires and tighten the drums
Lastly,
you will need to secure the lift cable in the cable slot. Also, remember to
tighten the drums with the pliers. After that, it's time to roll up the wire,
tightening as much as possible before putting in the set screws.
Lastly,
you'll want to make sure that both sides of the garage door are tight equally.
That way, your door will open properly and evenly.
